Mobile Phones: The enterprise communications takeover
At 2010-09-14 10:23:12The rage over mobile phones has never been hotter. Every media outlet from the Web to TV and print is saturated with the incessant debate over iPhone vs. Blackberry vs. Android. While this may be fun and exciting for some, and has people waiting in line for days for the mere chance of getting their hands on one of these life changing devices, there is a much more important issue underlying all the hype that is being overlooked. While weve all been drooling over the cool features the devices offer from a consumer perspective, what we should be focusing on is that these devices in the not so distant future are going to take over and replace many of the enterprise tools we use and pu Read More -
Recruiting in a technical world
At 2010-06-16 09:03:53I'm very happy to say that things are progressing very well at Stack8 and we are now in a position to grow our team. This is both an exciting and daunting task all at the same time. In my career I have had the opportunity to hire several dozen people in both technical and non technical roles, I find technical ones to be the most challenging. Early in my career,I made my technical hires based primarily on skills and experience. I would scan CV's for keywords, technologies and roles and make judgement as to the person's technical competencies. It seemed reasonable that technical skills were most important for technical roles. I was wrong Recruiting for a technical role is no different than Read More -
Money is not the only currency in negotiations
At 2010-05-05 09:11:19If you don't negotiate then you shouldn't be the person doing the purchasing. If you think negotiating is about paying the lowest possible price and having your supplier make the least amount of profit then you shouldn't be the one negotiating either. True negotiation is about finding ways where both sides give a little to get a little more. It's about making the overall deal more attractive for everyone. The lowest price is not always the best price, in fact I've heard many bad stories which started with getting the best deal. It may be the case if you are buying a commodity product and never intend to use the supplier again, but how often is that the case What if you are buying services, Read More -
The Devil is in the Details!
At 2010-04-28 11:08:25Why having access to all the information is key to making the right IT decision. Yesterday, I attended a convention focused on unified communications where all the major players were in attendance. This was my first UC event where I was not representing a manufacturer MFG and I was looking forward to seeing how I would interpret and respond to the information presented. All of the MFGs presented their case as to why their offering is best, which is normal for such events. What struck me the most was how little many of the MFGs knew about their competition. Often enough, an MFG would make a statement as if they invented the concept or developed the application, even though it has been a Read More -
Stack8 website officially launches
At 2010-04-25 13:12:32It's likely irony that the day we plan to launch our new website, one of my most valued communication tools, my blackberry dies. It had been working fine when I shut it down for the night, but come morning it refused to turn back on. I immediately panicked, which is funny because I am far from an addict. My thoughts revolved around my limited access to information. Phone numbers, addresses, notes andcalendarevents all stored within this little device. I find solace in knowing that I don't need to remember all these things, that they are all stored conveniently within this device. Mypanicquickly subsided when I gave more thought to the situation. In starting our enterprise, we had the o Read More -
